What it's about

Great at practice. Then one mistake, and the whole game falls apart.

If your player replays every missed shot in the car, freezes on game day or sinks after a bad call, this playbook gives them a plan for the tough moments, and gives you the words to help.

At its heart is the Next Play Routine: Breathe. Reset. Next. Three steps kids can use on the field in seconds, and practice like any other skill.

Written for players ages 9-13 in rec, travel and club soccer. Short chapters, clear steps, no lectures. Coaches can use it for team talks.

Inside the book

  • 20 game situations every young player faces: butterflies before a big game, right after a mistake, the penalty kick, a coach who yells, getting subbed off, tryouts, coming back from an injury, a slump, and more
  • The Next Play Routine (Breathe. Reset. Next.): a simple routine kids can use on the field in seconds
  • A 5-minute Brain Drill in every situation, with space to write
  • Find Your Situation: an index by problem, so your player opens the book at the page they need today
  • Car Ride Home: what parents and coaches can say (and what to skip) after the game, plus a full section for grown-ups
  • Free bonus for readers: printable routine cards, a game journal and a 20-minute coach's guide

Situation 6: Right after a mistake

The Moment

Jordan has the ball at midfield. Open space ahead. A teammate is calling for it on the left.

Jordan looks up, swings the leg, and the pass goes straight to the other team's striker. Two touches later, it's in the back of your net.

The parents on the other side cheer. Someone on your sideline groans, loud enough to hear. Jordan's face turns hot. The coach throws up both hands.

Now the ball is back at the center spot. The whistle is about to blow. And Jordan's brain is doing what brains love to do after a mistake: playing the replay. Again. And again. In slow motion.

Maybe you know this feeling. Most players do. The real question isn't how to never make a mistake. It's what you do in the next ten seconds.
